Educated in architecture, computer graphics, literature, and literary theory, Judith Barry produces videos, performances, and installation projects that explore themes ranging from Greek mythology to popular culture and contemporary technologies. For Maelstrom: Max Laughs (1988), Barry projected onto the gallery floor a video that delivers a dense two-minute-long history of communication and information technologies, pointing to the ways in which they have eroded private spaces and challenging conventional notions of the built environment. For “Not Reconciled: Cairo Stories”, a project currently in progress, she has made multiple trips to Cairo over six years to interview over 200 women from all demographics, exploring their cultural and economic realities. She intends to write scripts based on the interviews and return to Cairo to film the narratives. Other works have included interactive video games.
