Working in an expressive style he’s dubbed “Science Fiction Expressionism,” André Butzer paints biomorphic figures against chaotic, psychedelic backgrounds and color fields. The artist’s psychologically raw forms evoke the works of Willem de Kooning and Philip Guston; Butzer reinterprets their animated, dynamic gestures with his own cartoonish visual language, which embraces exaggeration and maximalism. His energetic markmaking and scribbles can also evoke the canvases of Joan Mitchell and Cy Twombly. Butzer has exhibited in New York, Berlin, Tokyo, Paris, Dubai, Copenhagen, and Geneva, among other cities. His work has fetched six figures on the secondary market and belongs in the collections of Fondazione Prada, Saatchi Gallery, the Goetz Collection, the Rubell Museum, and the University of Chicago, among other institutions.
