Zeynep Kayan’s photography explores the limitless possibilities of the medium in relation to portraiture and performance. Through experimentation and chance, the artist articulates a personal vocabulary of mystical desire, existential angst and confluent counter-narratives. Using image itself as material, Kayan looks for new opportunities in vision and perception, using the repetitious structural setup of the variations she creates by fiddling with form. Her empirical artistic production which continuously alternates between a performative state of being and not being, re-examines the environment and the individual from different points of view. About her series “Uncomplete”, Kayan says that: “Taking the same picture over and over again imposes a continual fluctuation on the concept of time that the photograph actually depends on and eliminates the beginning and the end. This provides me with an opportunity to recreate the murky and imperfect images of the past I have idealized.”
