Subodh Gupta is perhaps best known for making large-scale sculptures and installations out of everyday objects such as the steel kitchen utensils that are ubiquitous throughout India; these works address the country’s changing social landscape. Gupta often collages his shiny materials into minimal assemblages with ironic Duchampian undertones. He comments on tradition and modernization with a wry sense of humor: U.F.O. (2007), for example, is a large-scale sculpture made from brass water utensils that Gupta fused together to resemble a shiny flying saucer. Another work, My Family Portrait (2013), doubles as a set of three common utensil shelves. Gupta’s focus on kitchenware also extends to his paintings. The artist has exhibited in New York, Shanghai, London, New Delhi, Paris, and Berlin. His work has sold for seven figures at auction and belongs in the collections of the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi, the Fondation Louis Vuitton, the Centre Pompidou, Museo Jumex, and Saatchi Gallery.
