A pivotal figure in the use of computer technology as an artistic medium, Jim Campbell blurs the line between reality and abstraction and analog and digital in his work, which stimulates an experience of turning data into recognition. The recipient of numerous awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship, Campbell uses his degrees in mathematics and engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to create technologically advanced artwork. Using technology made for sending and saving information, his electronic installations examine human consciousness and thought. Made with grids of LED lights, works such as Temple at Yunnan (variation) (2019) involve viewer participation to perceive the image and infer meaning from a limited amount of information. Campbell’s work has been exhibited at the Whitney Biennial and is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Denver Art Museum.
