Ekin Su Koç’s figurative works and gestural abstractions reflect themes of migration, dislocation, and the fragmented self. Working in collage, oil painting, and wall-based sculpture, Koç moves freely between references, alluding to her multicultural upbringing in Istanbul, Berlin, and Copenhagen. Koç’s unique personal lexicon incorporates a constantly evolving array of materials to explore the complexity of her Turkish heritage and cultural identity and navigate the dislocation between the individual and the collective. Her works feature hand-knitted Anatolian and Aegean fabrics and lace, architectural motifs and stucco found in German apartments, dried flowers, family pictures, and photographs from magazines. The cross-cultural richness of Koç’s visual language is also reflected in her educational background, comprising a BA from Mimar Sinan Fine Art University, an MFA from Isik University, and an MA in painting from the University of Seville.
