Exploring memory, place, and the process of coming of age, the crisp photographs of Alessandra Sanguinetti often depict quiet, everyday scenes in big cities. A large part of her oeuvre consists of images taken in Buenos Aires, where she grew up. In one series, Sanguinetti chronicled the relationship of two nine-year-old cousins, Belinda and Guille, capturing the beauty of their bond as they grew from girls to young women over the course of five years. The resulting book, “The Adventures of Guille and Belinda and the Enigmatic Meaning of their Dreams” (2010), includes works such as The Necklace (2000), which shows the young girls seated together on a bed examining a pendant, surrounded by walls covered in peeling paint. A member of Magnum Photos, Sanguinetti has received a fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation and a grant from the Hasselblad Foundation. Her photographs are held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
