Marcel Broodthaers

Marcel Broodthaers

Belçika·1924–1976

In a career that lasted only 12 years, Belgian artist Marcel Broodthaers created a highly influential body of conceptual work that explored the meaning of art and language, and the relationship between text and image, with intellectual rigor and wit. Throughout his varied practice, the artist made sculptures, films, paintings, and prints. He wrote poetry for decades before turning his attention to visual art at age 40. Broodthaers often incorporated common objects into his work or appropriated themes and motifs from other artists—particularly Marcel Duchamp and René Magritte, two of his major influences. Broodthaers has been the subject of exhibitions at Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Museum of Modern Art, and the S.M.A.K. Museum of Contemporary Art, among many other institutions. During his lifetime, he participated in several editions of Documenta and the Venice Biennale. On the secondary market, his work has sold for six figures.
